Default the cold war should be missed

i was thinking if the cold war was still around the usa would be less likely to invade other countries, less likely to bomb other countries and medle in world affairs less often. in a sense the stalemate between usa and the other super power, soviet russia created a situation where any direct warfare would result in mutual annihilation making open warfare unthinkable. i happen to think that occupying a country by force does not generate stability but in the end stimulates more terrorism as existing forces have an easier time rallying more people to there anti american/western cause cause (not to mention it winds up antogonising an entire religion). in a sense if the situation still existed usa might not have risked invading iraq and maybe now iran for fear of upsetting the other super power. in a sense the stalemate ensured neither coult take liberties as the usa does so easily now, i think despite the tension it was a safer situation as only total muttual destruction can provide.

Sorry but I happen to disagree. If we were in the Cold War still, we would unlikey hesitate to invade Iraq.

Why?

Because they are not one of the Russians allies. The Russians also invaded Afghanistan from 1979-1989. We invaded Afghanistan first, before moving to Iraq. Yes we still would have their nukes pointed at us and our nukes pointed at them, but I doubt that would influence us invading Afghanistan and Iraq. The Cold War and the Iraqi war are two completely different situations. We were attacked by terrorist whom we linked back to Osoma Bin Laden and the Taliban. They were placed in Afghanistan but since Saddam helped supply Bin Laden we moved to Iraq and took out Saddam, whom we deemed a terrorist. Also the US supplied Iraq military equipment during the Iraq-Iran war. So part of this war is the US fault.

Basically if the Cold War was still going on we would have STILL invaded Iraq and Afghanstan because they have no affiliation with Russia.

EDIT: Oh ya one more thing. When Russia (Soviet Union at the time) invaded Afghanstan another foreign power supplied the Taliban weapons to fight them off. That was...

F***

Thats right, AMERICA. Sorry but if the Cold War was still going on, wouldn't change anything.

if you think like that, shouldn't the US invade the US and take out the CIA?

To the op. It's unlikely it would have prevented it, however the casualty numbers would probably have been stacking higher than they currently are. The old USSR sold weapons to many middle east states to gain hard currency reserves and in an attempt to garner favour with the oil rich states and finally in an attempt to destabalise Israel.

By the way. US, UK and France supplied weapons to the Taliban during the occupation, many of which are now being used on...US and UK soldiers, go figure.

i just think that the "tension" would discourage bushs probing expeditons and usa role as world police.

Nope, wouldn't stop him.

And no lowlife I am not suggesting we fight ourselves, rather our government should stop handing out weapons to other countries. Duh!

What has discouraged Bush from doing anything? Even though he was a drunk C-average student, that didn't stop him from thinking, "Hey, I think I'll run for president today."

ok, won't talk too much...but here goes ^^:

Durig the cold war, yes it was a period of high tension, but it was also a period of stability. With 2 super power pointing nukes at each other, neither dared to make a move out of fear of nuking each other to death.

Now our days with only 1 super power, people are a bit less happy.

Yes they were no happy before, but now they have an excuse to go attack the US ( some thing like.....ONOZ they have nukes....there bullying me!!11111!1, lets go kill the infidel....ect.....)

All it is is an other period in history, a bit more chaotic yes, but an other step non the less.

Once this period is over, a few years of some what global peace will come and then an other intense period.

I think this quote describes best how our are society works

"Peace is only a small break in between wars"

Anyways, in the past, it us to be every one against France (napoleon)....then Every one Against Germany (after the defeat of napoleon).

Thos are the only 2 example I can think of, but there are probably more.

We supplied them weapons, weapons that are now causing American deaths. No we didn't tell them to attack us, but we also didn't need to give them the weapons. So in a backdoor sort of way, yes, it is our fault. No weapons, no war. Yes they would of gotten weapons somehow but not the amount they have as of now.

Back then it was a different story, different enemies, the US needed allies in that region and guess who was figthing the soviet at that time. Agree with Pwnd, that in a way it all come back and bite us all in the ass now.

The first thing I thought was "we would have a moon base and manned missions to mars would have happened".

Politics is one of the few off-limits subjects for the forum. Most people simply can not stay away from getting personal over their political beliefs, and it always leads to the thread becoming a flaming train wreck.
